I went in there and a nice writing fellow sat me down and said read your paper aloud. I read it to her and she said it was really good. That statement lifted a lot of pressure off of me. As she guided me through my paper, I was just shocked about how kind she was. I honestly thought I would just go one time and never come back, but my experience there was really helpful.

The Writing Center
The Writing Center is an awesome place for EHS students to get help on writing. For example, help on papers, or just 2 paragraph blogs. My first experience at the writing center was really cool. At first I was extremely nervous because I didn't know if the writing fellow would judge me or say my paper was awful. I thought I would give it a try anyway!
How is 9th grade English different from 8th?
Transitioning into high school was a major step. I was excited to go into high school because I wouldn't be treated as a middle schooler or a little girl anymore. I was nervous, but happy when going into all of my new more advance classes. I walked into English and met Dr.D. Her enthusasim to teach made me feel a little more comfortable. Then, I sat down and just started processing everything.
First Dr. D went over all the requirements. I remember Mrs. Milligan doing the same thing, we sat down introduced ourselves, and went over what we were going to be expecting this year. So far, Dr. D's class as been more difficult then Mrs. Milligans, but that's just because it's suppose to be. Moving from middle school to high school is suppose to test your knowledge. Mrs. Milligan's class surely did, and now Dr. D is doing the same.

Lord of the flies
So far, I have found LOTF really interesting. I knew I was going to like it because my Dad told me it was a really good book. I really like the amount of effort that the author put in each and every word. Even when you don't think a phrase or a word is important, it means something in the big picture. I enjoy the symbolism it has with the bible. Lately, the author has connected the book with the bible. It's funny because when someone in my class said that it related to the garden of Eve, I looked back and thought that it sure did.
My favorite character in LOTF is defiantly Ralph. He reminds me of people I know. He shows leadership, curiosity, and best of all, he gets annoyed with the little kids. Also, Ralph kind of does his own thing, he doesn't follow others. I really admire that characteristic. I honestly cannot wait to read more and discover more of Ralph adorable traits.

Self written prompt.
In LOTF, do you think it's fair that the boys picked one leader?
No, I do not think it is fair that the boys picked a leader. I feel like each of the boys should have worked together and put in teamwork, rather than having one ruler. Readers have the impression that Ralph is a good kid, but good enough to be leader of about 18 stranded boys on a deserted island?
My argument is that the boys should not have just jumped into conclusion and picked the boy with the conch shell as leader. I feel like it would have been better in that ran a race to see whose faster, or something like that. It would have made the story a little more interesting or exciting.

Driving
I'm almost 15, so I have started to practice driving. Janurary 5th I will be able to get my permit. I am really nervous. My sister doesn't really trust me driving her car, but my dad lets me. A couple days ago my dad let me drive his small car to go eat dinner. I was gripping the wheel so tight my hands were red. It was dark and rainy outside, and that is like my fourth time driving. I ended up doing great though!
One thing I cannot stand is big cars. I get scared going on the road with them. I just drove my uncles truck and it was the scariest thing ever! I cannot even relax in cars like that. We went on the back roads of my neighborhood, so it wasn't as bad. I only got honked at one time, which is good for me, because I was going a little less than the speed limit. I just ignore the honk though, because I try not to let other cars pressure me.

LOTF activity response
This week Dr. D told us to imagine if we were trapped on an island together; the first thing that shot through my mind was oh great! I don't mean this is a rude way, but I would not want to be trapped on an island, much less with 18 high schoolers trying to establish things. The first thing we did was try to shout ideas over each other. When that failed, we said that you could only talk if you had the fork in your hand. All of our ideas were crashing.
I think if this was really life, I would cry my eyes out, be frightened, and just kind of go with the flow. I would stay with the class though, not branch out and fight for my own self. If this happened over a long period of time, I truly believe we would have stuff figured out. We would have a camp ground, fire, a doctor, shelter, and etc. I believe my class could sort things out, it would just be hard at first. One thing my class would have done well was establish all the necessity to life. We would build shuttlers, find water, start a fire, find food, and etc. I think we would all assign roles or jobs for people in the class. One big challenge that we would have defiantly faced was handing out those jobs.

fReE p0sT (Friday's retreat)
On Friday. October 25, the freshman's had there first retreat. Most of my class was excepting it to be boring because we had to work all day, but I looked at it as a ticket out of school. When we first got to the retreat, I saw a lot of water bottles. It was freezing, but we still needed some way to hydrate ourselves. I was shivering as they put us into groups. The first thing my group had to do was cut weeds and trees and just clear out this part of the side walk. Well, for an hour we all sat there with face mask on trying not to inhale the floating pollen. After about an hour, I stepped back reliaziing that my group's hard work did pay off. Next up, was making a trail. For the next hour we had to sit there and clears a pathway or soon to be trail. It was hard, but very fun. I felt that my group really accomplished the task given. The next activity, was listening to these 2 people talk. Some but say that was boring, but it was fun because I got to sit down for a while blur out voices while listening to the nature.
Lunch cam next. We ate hot pizza and drank the semi cool water bottles we had been asked to bring. After we ate, we just got to chill and hang around the park. Then the last yet most fun activity was canoeing. Audrey and I, hopped in the canoe in search of some trash. We were like pro canoers, everything went smooth. Nobody fell in! I was sad when canoeing ended because that meant the day was over. We hopped back on the bus and had a good time until we arrived at EHS. My experience's during that retreat are very memorable!

the 3 short stories
The three short stories I read were The Sniper, Araby, and The Chrysanthemums. I noticed that in each one of these stories I had way more annotations than I'm used to. I think the reasoning for this is because after the test I clearly know this material. It took me about 35 minutes each story.
The elements I found easiest to find was definatly character and setting. To me, in all three of the above stories, those 3 elements just stood out. Each author described the characters in there story vividly and fully. Fully meaning that I could picture each character. The other element that was easy to find was setting. In the stories we read as a class, to me the setting was difficult to find, but in those 3 stories it seemed easier! Like way easier!

Short Stories
So far this year has been really successful. I have a real warm feeling inside, telling me that out of all the things we've done in English so far, I will enjoy short stories the most. Unlike literacy narratives, short stories can be creative in your own way. It's not just a story that you recall, you can make this story your own. You can put some original flavor in it.
I have to admit preparing for my own short story has been a little difficult. I have so many ideas in my head and my hand can't jot them down quickly, and before I know it I have forgotten them. But just recently coming up with ideas has became particularly easy. This is because in the past few days because I have read the assigned short stories. Since I have done this, I have mentally examine ideas in my head that I can put in my very own short story. Hopefully this time the brilliant ideas will not be forgotten!

A mermaids thoughts
Why can't I fall asleep. I lie awake each and every night and my thoughts keep me up. I have a big day at school tomorrow. Let's see, I have, Swim class first, How to clean your tail second block, and then... Ugh then I have P.E. class with Coach Hammerhead. Doesn't seem like it will be a good day. Well, on the bright side, I get to sit by Jazzel in two of my class. Jazzel always seems to keep me entertained as we gossip. I know I'm missing something. Something big taking place tomorrow.
THAT'S IT! I get to watch the dolphin's race after school tomorrow. Mommy said she would pick me up there and drop me off at the coral. I wonder if she remembers that she has to do that. Should I go wake her? No, I'll just tell her in the morning. Well I should probably be getting to sleep, I have a heck of a day tomorrow.

Harrison Bergeron
The short story of Harrison Bergeron was quite interesting. At first when I read it was a little puzzled. I had to go back a re- read some parts just to let them process through my brain. Re-reading these certain parts, and discussing it it class, made me think it was a lot like divergent. A lot of social diversity, and perfection. Not only, was Harrison Bergeron interesting, it also had a humor side to it too.
At the beginning of the story I was uncertain where it was heading. I was confused how or why they put the son in jail. I kept on reading more, and ran into confusion with the ear pierce. To be completely honest, I thought it was a hearing add at first. I soon discovered that it was a ear pierce, that technically messed with your brains train of thought. All those little things about the story really had me going into detail and re-reading it. Anyways, I really did enjoy "Harrison Bergeron", and some of it's humor.

E-books
I am so pumped to make an E book. E books are such great inventions, and I have always wanted to create one. I am truly excited about making one because the whole classes work put together in an online books just sounds perfect. Seeing or reading my peers work always gives me such a rush. Now, that I can read there work with such easy access is so great.
In my literacy narrative there is no names I really need to change. I do not include any students in my paper, just my fourth grade teacher. Although my paper doesn't need to be changed name wise, I could always use some extra eyes. I love having other student correct the mistakes or error I don't see because It helps my paper come together as a whole.
Even though we haven't started our E books yet, I can wait to make mine look colorful and poppy. I want to put colorful pictures or quotes. For example, maybe a cool neon pink pattern of art. Just to make the paper seem bright and not boring. I would also love to paint or draw a picture myself just to avoid copy right issues. Maybe I can even include a moving header for my paper. All these ideas are filling my head, and I am more than anxious to start designing the class E book.

Murder
In latin class, we are reading a story called, Murder. It is in chapter XXI, 21, in our Ecce Romani book.
The story Murder is about two guys, Aulus and Semptimus, who take a trip to Greece. One of which stays at a friends house, the other stays in a inn. Back then, staying in an inn was like sleeping on the streets, very dangerous. While Semptimus was asleep at his freinds house, Aulus appeared to him in a dream. In the dream Aulus said that he needed help and that the innkeeper was going to murder him. Semptimus woke up panicked, but then remembered it was only a dream. He quickly fell back to sleep and again Aulus appeared.
Aulus said, " You are to late, I am dead and the innkeeper has hidden my body."
Semptimus soon woke up. He went to the inn in the morning to see Aulus, and come to find out he had been killed. Gruesome, but true.
After translating this story, I noticed something that caught my attention. That was the stories creativity and vividness. Although it is in Latin, I have realized that they use adverbs such as, slowly or gently, to describe a characters movement. This really helped me picture the scene of the story, and what was really going on because after all Latin is difficult to understand.

Let's play 20 questions
It was a dark stormy night. Thunder shaking the wooden house, and lightening brightening up the sky. George and Kyle are home all alone and are as scared as ever. To get things off there minds George has an idea.
"Let's play 20 questions," George screeches.
"I don't think that's a very good idea George," Kyle manages to say while turning on his flashlight.
"But Kyle it's better than sitting here and having to be silent," exclaims George.
"Well if we're silent whoever's out there can't hear us," Kyle says under his breath.
Angry, George drops his flashlight, and it hits the floor with a kaboom. Kyle rushes to the scene and yells, "Good one dummy, now we defiantly blew our cover."
Persistently, George whips his head around and says, "Well now can we play?"
"Sure...Sure. I guess so. You start." Kyle shouts in a "whatever" kind of tone.
"Yes, okay. What is your all-time favorite movie?"
"That's a tough one. Probably..Umm..."
This went on until the boys parents finally came home, and told the boys they had hung some clothing on the line and it looked like someone was standing out there. In relief, the boys went right to bed, still a little timid to sleep with both eyes closed.

First Literacy Narrative
This week we had to write our first personal literacy narrative. Yay! At first I was really excited, but then I heard the length of the paper had to be at least 2 pages going on to three. My first thought was at least we get to double space it to make it longer. Dr. D also told us the format of the paper had to be MLA, and that format is super boring. In the beginning, I was really struggling about what to write about. We're y'all? I had to think about all different writing assignments that I did in the past. Finally, I decided to chose my first writing assignments in fourth grade to write my literacy narrative on.
After I chose what I was going to write about, I got to writing. I typed some things and then some more and on and on. At first, I didn't have the proper format, so when I did put it in MLA format my paper was three pages long. I was SO excited. I didn't think I could write that much, and I was shocked to find out when I did write three pages it wasn't as hard as I thought. It came to my attention that maybe I could be a decent writer.

I have a dream speech
What made the "I have a dream" speech, spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the greatest speeches speaking moments of all time?
I feel that the components that make up the "I have a dream" speech are very powerful. King had a good way of putting his words into Americans hearts and minds. One small but great thing I noticed was that King's voice while giving the speech is quite calm and inspiring. I also couldn't help but notice his words were rolling off his lips like he knew exactly what to say next.
Martin Luther is a phenomenal leader, and a outstanding roll model. He shows qualities all leaders should have such as commitment, trust, and responsibility. He was a liked and appriated man, and the "I have a dream" speech is legendary.

Reading Response- The hate list
Valerie Leftman has just gone back to school after a terrible tragedy that most people think she caused. The deaths of more than 5 people at Val's high school has darkened her sweet soul. Val cannot even think about being happy anymore. On her first day she tries to think about staying focused on school, but all she can think about is Nick her ex who killed himself after he shot other students. As you can tell, the first day back to the frightening high school where everything went down is tough for Val but most of all worth it.
What I like most about Valerie's character so far is that her emotions are clear. The author, Jennifer Brown, describes her as a weak, confused, lost teenage girl who has experienced what average teens haven't. I feel like the author really does develop the beginning of the book well, and I look forward to reading on.

This monday we had our first cross country practice at highland road park. It was not so enjoyable. Highland road park is basically a hilly grassland where runners can practice running. Well after a long day of school that was the last place I wanted to be. When I first got off the bus, my water in my hand dripping off my fingertips, I felt the itchy grass already sticking to my boney legs. Coach Cole told us to stretch and hit a mile. As I start on my mile, my knees feel weak but I know I have to push through this practice to make me better. Then about 12 seconds went by, and I slowly start to walk the rest of the way. I gave up. There was no way I could run in the heat like this. I was far to tired.
When I got back to the cross country group, I was breathing in and out, so short of breath. I was so worn out and I feel like Coach Cole could see it. He told me I could sit out the next lap and catch my breath. I pulled up my shirt and felt my cold stomach. A cold stomach means you burned calories, so I was excited about that. Twenty minutes went by and practice was over. I got in the car and turned the air conditioning up on full blast!

How does the front/back of the book attract the reader?
To me, finding a book is very difficult. Well that might be because books never appeal to me, but it is still quite a hard process. First off, pick a book thats cover is exquisite or attractive. Then always read the back or the first page of the book, and see if it interest you. Just because the book doesn't look that good doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it. Never judge a book by it's cover!!
Another thing, look for a book thats your style. What I mean by style is one that is short or long. Or one that is appropriate for your grade level. I have experienced not being able to find a book, and it's not fun. But once you find one you can snuggle up in a warm blanket and read all night!

Baton Rouge Dance
Last weekend I experienced my first high school dance. It was so much fun! We danced, partied, and chatted. To be honest, I was nervous at first. When I first walked into the dance the freshman were in the back by the door, talking. It was a little embarrassing for our grade because we were unsure what to do. My sister, a junior, came up and brought me to the front of the crowd. There, it got crazy. There were a bunch of high schoolers that I did recognize, which made me more comfortable. Towards the end of the party, everything was okay. I wasn't nervous anymore, and I had a fun time with my friends.
After the dance, there was an after party! Well this was not the average rad after party you're thinking of. This kind of after party was more of a stuff our face with waffles and talk about the drama that went down at our first cotillion party. Just girl stuff, you know? We all sat down in my friend, Stolz, kitchen and watched Claudia make us fluffy waffles. It got up till about 3-3:30ish and we all started piling upstairs. In bed we caught up a little more, since we didn't really talk as much at the dance. We also exchanged pictures, well ones that we looked good in anyway. Overall I could honestly tell you it was a very fun experience, and I hope the next dance is like that.

How can you relate to the main character of this book?
In the book The Hate List the main character is Valerie Leftman. She is a not like any other teenage girl. Valerie has experienced some really difficult things for a teenager to be experiencing. One example is death. Val and has gone threw a school shooting by her own boyfriend. This eventually develops Val into a very strong, fearless, and brave character. I believe I show the same traits as Val. Strong through tough situations, fearless at all times, but overall brave.
Also, I feel like it is important to be able to relate to at least one character in the book you have chosen to read. I feel this way because you get more of a visual and more of a purpose to continue reading. If you can visualize yourself in that situation it is easier for you to be able to relate to them. Also, if you can connect at least one character in the book, then that gives you more of a purpose to continue the book and maybe even enjoy it more.
It is also a really good book! I suggest all to read it!

High school
This 2013-2014 school year I plan to be successful. I plan to put forth all my focus and education ability, but I mostly plan to thrive for success. I have heard that ninth grade is a struggle. Moving from middle school to high school it can give you a major wake up call. This year I am hoping to find success in all my tough classes. For example, Biology honors. I hope I can look myself in the mirror at the end of each quarter and say, "Well Sophie I'm proud of your grades."
One thing I've noticed about high school, that is diffrent, is that there is a ton more homework. That is such a bad thing because you have sports every night and the chaos at home can make you not focus as much. This year I plan to get out of practice and go straight to my homework, not sit around on the couch and play candy crush. Although in high school you have more freedom it is a little intimidating being a freshman, just because your the baby. Overall, high school is going smooth so far and I hope it maintains to be that way.

The book I disliked most was The Knife of Never Letting go. When I first started the book, I did not feel like I was completely engaged. At first I thought that it was just because it was the beginning of the book, so I kept reading on. As I kept reading, I do have to admit I was getting a little into the book. I then realized the problem. I did not feel like I was relating to the characters, and the book didn't have any effect or meaning to me in life. Opposing from divergent. Another thing that I disliked was the bad ending. It was one of those books where I was waiting for the happy ending and then BAM it hit me with the worst ending ever.
Not inferring The Knife of Never Letting go was the worst book I have ever read, but it was one I didn't seem to like as much as others. What I find most confusing is the characters in the story. In chapters 1 & 2 you hardly know much about Aaron, but towards the end he is the biggest most aggravating character. Things like that do not make me want to read the second book. Also, I felt the story or plot line of the book was uninteresting, and boring. Overall, The Knife of Never Letting go was one book that I do not recommend for others.
